Kalka-Shimla Railway Chugs Back to Life After Landslide Ordeal
The iconic Kalka-Shimla railway line resumed services on September 6, 2025, after a week-long disruption caused by landslides. Three trains successfully completed the journey, marking a significant step towards normalcy.
However, passenger occupancy remained low, hovering around 50%, primarily attributed to the persistent heavy rainfall. Many travellers chose to postpone their journeys due to the inclement weather.
The track had been closed since August 31 and September 1, following torrential downpours that triggered significant debris accumulation, necessitating extensive restoration work. Railway officials worked tirelessly to clear the tracks and ensure passenger safety.
This resumption of services offers a much-needed boost to tourism in Himachal Pradesh, though the impact of the recent landslides and the ongoing monsoon season on the state’s economy remains a concern. The railway’s long-term resilience against future weather events is a critical issue that needs addressing.
