Monsoon Fury: Tricity Drowns, Zirakpur Isolated
Torrential rain lashed Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula on Saturday, leaving several areas waterlogged. Zirakpur bore the brunt of the downpour, with significant infrastructure damage causing widespread disruption.
Many localities remain inaccessible due to washed-away roads and bridges, a consequence of the earlier heavy rainfall. Authorities opened the Sukhna Lake’s floodgates as a precautionary measure.
The Ghaggar river, a perennial source of concern during monsoons, is currently reported to be under control. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted further rainfall in the coming days.
MP Manish Tewari visited the affected areas, assessing the damage and suggesting long-term improvements to the region’s drainage system. His recommendations are expected to be crucial in mitigating future flood risks.
The current situation highlights the urgent need for robust infrastructure and disaster management plans in the Tricity region to better withstand the increasing intensity of monsoon seasons. The coming days will be crucial in determining the full extent of the damage and the effectiveness of the relief efforts.
