Natural Farming Boost: Himachal’s Rice Fields Get a Research Shot in the Arm

A collaborative research project focusing on the impact of natural farming methods on rice cultivation has been launched. The project, a joint venture between Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, commenced on September 9, 2025.

The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Janardan Singh, aims to significantly enhance rice productivity and farmer profitability. Simultaneously, the project seeks to bolster environmental sustainability within rice-based farming systems.

IRRI has provided a substantial initial grant of Rs 15.30 lakh to kickstart the two-year research project, spanning 2025-2027. The findings are expected to have significant implications for Himachal Pradesh’s agricultural landscape.

This research holds immense potential for improving the livelihoods of farmers in Himachal Pradesh, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and reducing the environmental footprint of rice cultivation. The success of this project could pave the way for wider adoption of natural farming techniques across the state and beyond.
