Ajnala’s Crumbling Defences: 50-Foot Breach Threatens Punjab Villages
A massive breach in the embankment near Ghonewal village in Ajnala tehsil continues to pose a significant threat to nearly 200 villages in Punjab. The 500-meter-long breach, initially estimated at 25-30 feet deep, has now been revised to a staggering 50 feet.
Repair work began on September 3rd, but despite the tireless efforts of volunteers and the administration, only half the breach has been plugged. The scale of the damage is far greater than initially anticipated.
The unprecedented depth of the breach is hampering repair efforts, raising concerns about the structural integrity of the embankment and the potential for further damage during the upcoming winter months.
This incident highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the region. The vulnerability of these villages underscores the importance of proactive measures to prevent similar crises in the future. The long-term implications for agriculture and livelihoods in the affected areas remain a serious concern.
