Saragarhi’s Unsung Heroes: Dhun Dhia to Become Military Tourism Hub
INTACH Punjab is spearheading a significant initiative to commemorate the unparalleled bravery of the 21 Sikh soldiers who valiantly defended Saragarhi against 10,000 Afghan tribesmen in 1897. The project focuses on developing Naik Lal Singh’s native village, Dhun Dhia, into a prominent military tourism site.
This ambitious undertaking aims to not only honour the supreme sacrifice of these courageous warriors but also to preserve and promote Punjab’s rich cultural heritage. Key aspects of the plan include the restoration of a historic well and the establishment of a museum dedicated to the Battle of Saragarhi.
The museum will serve as a repository of historical artefacts and documents, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of this pivotal battle and the unwavering courage displayed by the Sikh soldiers. The restoration of the well is symbolic of reviving a vital part of the village’s history.
This project holds immense potential to boost local tourism and generate economic opportunities for Dhun Dhia. Moreover, it will serve as a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of the Sikh soldiers and their enduring legacy for generations to come. The initiative underscores the importance of remembering and celebrating India’s military history.
