Modi-Vance Summit: Trade Deal Progress Reviewed Amidst Tariff Tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance held a high-level meeting on Monday night, April 21, 2025. The focus of their discussions was the progress of ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.
The talks come against the backdrop of previous trade disputes. US President Donald Trump had earlier imposed, and subsequently paused, significant tariffs on goods from around 60 countries, India among them.
New Delhi and Washington are currently engaged in intensive negotiations. The aim is to finalise a mutually beneficial trade agreement that addresses concerns on both sides.
The outcome of these negotiations holds significant implications for both economies. A successful agreement could boost bilateral trade and investment, creating jobs and fostering economic growth. Failure, however, could exacerbate existing trade tensions and impact the global economic landscape. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of Indo-US trade relations.
