PLA Jets Breach Taiwan Strait: Record Incursion Sparks Fresh Tensions

The Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported a significant escalation in tensions across the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. A total of 20 People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) aircraft were detected approaching Taiwan.

Thirteen of these aircraft crossed the median line of the strait, a de facto boundary separating the mainland from the island. This represents a substantial increase in PLA activity near Taiwan.

The incursion involved aircraft entering Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the northern, central, eastern and southwestern sectors.

This unprecedented level of activity follows a pattern of increasingly assertive actions by China towards Taiwan in recent months.

The incident raises serious concerns about regional stability and underscores the urgent need for international dialogue to de-escalate tensions in the strategically vital Taiwan Strait.
