Delhi’s Scrappage Policy: A Year’s Reprieve, But Accusations Fly High
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has deferred the ban on end-of-life vehicles in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The ban, initially slated for immediate implementation, will now commence in phases.
Specific areas within Delhi will see the ban come into effect on November 1, 2025. The rest of the NCR will follow suit on April 1, 2026.
Delhi’s Environment Minister welcomed the CAQM’s decision, citing the need for a phased approach to ensure a smooth transition.
Meanwhile, a probe into the previous government’s vehicle scrapping policy has been initiated. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the BJP of collusion, alleging deliberate sabotage of the clean air initiative.
The delay, while offering temporary respite to vehicle owners, raises questions about the effectiveness of long-term air quality management strategies in the region. The upcoming elections and the political sparring surrounding the issue add another layer of complexity to the already challenging task of improving Delhi’s air quality.
