Divert Chenab waters to Punjab, Haryana to resolve SYL issue: CM Mann at Centre’s meeting

SYL Canal Dispute: Centre Steps In, Deadline Looms

The Union Jal Shakti Ministry has initiated mediation efforts between Punjab and Haryana to resolve the long-standing Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal dispute. The Supreme Court has set a firm deadline of August 13 for a resolution.

The core issue revolves around the sharing of water from the Ravi and Beas rivers. Haryana is pressing for its allocated share as per the existing agreements.

Punjab, however, continues to resist, citing severe water scarcity and its inability to provide the allocated quantity. The state’s concerns are rooted in depleting groundwater levels and increasing agricultural demands.

The intervention by the Jal Shakti Ministry signifies the Centre’s crucial role in mediating this inter-state water conflict. The August 13 deadline adds immense pressure on both states to find a mutually agreeable solution. Failure to reach a consensus could have significant ramifications for both states, potentially escalating tensions and impacting agricultural productivity across the region.
