Delhi University to Debut Sikh History Course: Reclaiming a Legacy

The University of Delhi will introduce a dedicated course on Sikh history for the first time, commencing this academic year. This significant step aims to address historical gaps and highlight the contributions of Sikh figures to India’s rich tapestry.

The course, starting this academic year, will delve into the period from 1500 to 1765, a pivotal era in Sikh history. It will focus on Sikh martyrdom, resistance against oppression, and the evolution of the faith.

Professor Yogesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, announced the initiative. He emphasized the need to correctly represent India’s history and celebrate its unsung heroes. The curriculum will cover key figures and pivotal events of the time.

This new course is a welcome development, fostering a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of India’s past within the university system. Its timely introduction underscores the growing need for balanced and nuanced historical narratives in education. The impact on future generations, equipped with a more complete understanding of India’s diverse heritage, will be profound.
