Labour & Farmer Fury: Wage War Erupts Against Centre
A joint protest by the CITU and Himachal Kisan Sabha on July 9, 2025, fiercely condemned the central government’s recent labour codes and agricultural policies. The demonstrations highlighted widespread discontent across rural and urban India.
The protestors’ demands were sharp and pointed. They called for a substantial increase in the minimum wage, a guarantee of permanent employment opportunities, and a significant hike in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) budget. Access to essential welfare benefits was another key demand.
Farmers echoed similar concerns, adding their own pressing issues. These included urgent debt relief measures, a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce, protection of land rights, and the provision of local employment opportunities in all development projects.
The scale and intensity of this protest underscore a growing crisis of confidence in government policies. The demands raised reflect a deep-seated unease among both labourers and farmers, highlighting the need for immediate and effective government intervention to address these critical issues impacting millions of livelihoods across the nation.
