Delhi HC Reserves Verdict: Imam, Khalid’s UAPA Bail Pleas Hang in Balance

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved its judgment on the bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, and several others accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. The court will announce its decision at a later date.

The prosecution vehemently opposed the bail applications, arguing that the accused were part of a pre-planned conspiracy aimed at defaming India. They presented evidence to support their claims of a larger, coordinated effort.

The defence, however, contended that their clients have been incarcerated for an extended period and sought parity with other co-accused who have already been granted bail. They highlighted the prolonged detention as a significant factor in their plea.

The case has drawn considerable public attention, raising critical questions about the balance between national security and individual rights within the framework of the UAPA. The court’s decision will have significant implications for the ongoing legal proceedings and the larger debate surrounding the 2020 Delhi riots. The outcome will undoubtedly influence future UAPA cases and the interpretation of the law itself.
