Chandigarh Unveils ₹9,200 Crore Climate Gambit
The Union Territory (UT) Administration of Chandigarh has launched an ambitious ₹9,200 crore climate action plan, targeting significant emission reductions by 2050. The plan, unveiled on July 10, 2025, aims to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns.
Key initiatives under the plan include a substantial push towards renewable energy sources. This will be complemented by a large-scale adoption of electric mobility, with the introduction of 750 electric buses planned.
Efficient water and waste management systems are also central to the strategy. The administration aims to implement innovative solutions to tackle these crucial environmental challenges.
Greening initiatives, including extensive tree plantation and urban forest development, will also form a significant part of the plan. These measures are designed to improve air quality and create a more sustainable urban environment.
The plan acknowledges the projected changes in rainfall patterns and aims to build resilience against such climatic shifts. Its success will be crucial not only for Chandigarh but also as a model for other Indian cities facing similar environmental pressures. The implementation of this ambitious plan will be closely watched by urban planners and environmentalists across the nation.
