High Court Rejects JCB Owner’s Bail Plea in Punjab Riverbed Mining Case
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday, July 11, 2025, dismissed an anticipatory bail application filed by a JCB owner accused of illegal riverbed mining. The court expressed grave concerns over the environmental damage caused.
The court cast doubt on the veracity of a Gram Panchayat resolution presented in the owner’s defence. It deemed the resolution insufficient justification for the alleged illegal activity.
The High Court clarified that the availability of the JCB machine was a matter to be addressed during the trial proceedings. The owner’s legal team will now have to pursue other avenues for pre-arrest relief.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to protecting Punjab’s fragile environment and sends a strong message against illegal mining activities that threaten the state’s ecological balance and water resources. The case sets a significant precedent for future environmental crime prosecutions.
