Salix Revolution: Himachal’s Zero-Cost Soil Saver

The Dalhousie Forest Division’s innovative “Salix for Soil” campaign is gaining traction. Launched in 2023, this community-driven initiative combats soil erosion using Salix trees, commonly known as willow. The project involves planting moisture-absorbing Salix poles near streams.

This simple yet effective method helps stabilise the soil, preventing landslides and promoting biodiversity. Importantly, the entire campaign operates at zero cost, relying on community participation.

The success of “Salix for Soil” has led to its formalisation as a regular monsoon activity. This ensures the continuation of this environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution.

The initiative’s success in Himachal Pradesh offers a replicable model for other regions battling soil erosion. Its low-cost, community-based approach makes it particularly relevant for resource-constrained areas across India, promising a sustainable solution for a pressing environmental challenge.
