National Security Trumps Conservation: 32 Defence Projects Greenlit in Sensitive Himalayan Sanctuaries
The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) on July 11, 2025, gave its nod to 32 defence projects within ecologically sensitive sanctuaries across Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. These projects encompass aviation, road infrastructure, and missile facilities.
Significant tracts of land within the Karakoram and Changthang wildlife sanctuaries will be impacted by this development. The decision also clears the path for the Arunachal Frontier Highway, a project that will directly affect the Namdapha Tiger Reserve.
The NBWL’s approval has sparked concerns amongst conservationists regarding the potential impact on fragile Himalayan ecosystems and endangered wildlife. Mitigation measures and discussions on wildlife conservation strategies are reportedly planned.
However, the government has emphasized the strategic importance of these projects in the face of national security concerns. The delicate balancing act between national security and environmental protection in these border regions remains a critical challenge for India. This decision will undoubtedly fuel further debate on prioritizing development versus conservation in ecologically vulnerable areas.
