Dark Streets, Bright Spotlight: City Grapples with Streetlight Crisis
Councillor Gabi brought the issue of non-functional streetlights to the forefront during the recent Municipal Corporation meeting. She cited a Chandigarh Tribune report highlighting the widespread problem across the city.
The Chief Engineer responded by announcing a comprehensive city-wide survey to assess the extent of the damage. Plans are underway to replace faulty streetlights and engage a new maintenance company.
This comes in the wake of a notice issued by the Human Rights Commission, which has scheduled a hearing on the matter for September 19, 2025.
The lack of proper street lighting poses significant safety concerns for citizens, particularly women and children. The upcoming survey and the Human Rights Commission hearing will hopefully bring about much-needed improvements to the city’s infrastructure and ensure safer streets for all residents.
