Himachal Pradesh Schools Merge: Over 200 Institutions Affected in Restructuring
The Himachal Pradesh government has undertaken a major restructuring of its education system, impacting hundreds of schools. A Directorate of School Education proposal led to the denotification of 100 zero-enrollment schools on July 29, 2025.
Seventy-two of these were primary schools, while 28 were middle schools. This decision prioritised districts facing low student numbers, including Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra.
In addition, 120 primary schools with low enrolment were merged with others. The government is currently reviewing further mergers, though schools located in difficult terrains are likely to be exempted.
This move reflects the government’s efforts to optimise resource allocation within the state’s education sector. The long-term impact on student access to quality education and teacher deployment remains a key area of public concern.
