Navy takes delivery of first P17A frigate Himgiri from GRSE

Himgiri Joins Indian Navy: A New Era in Maritime Power

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) today delivered the advanced guided-missile frigate, INS Himgiri, to the Indian Navy. This marks a significant milestone, as Himgiri is the first of three such frigates under a massive Rs 21,833 crore contract.

The 149-meter warship, a product of Project 17A, boasts impressive capabilities. It is equipped with the potent BrahMos and Barak 8 missile systems, along with state-of-the-art radar technology.

Himgiri is designed for a wide range of naval warfare operations, significantly bolstering India’s maritime defence capabilities. Its induction enhances our ability to safeguard national interests in the Indian Ocean region and beyond.

This delivery underscores GRSE’s prowess in shipbuilding and its contribution to India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The commissioning of Himgiri, and the subsequent delivery of the remaining two frigates, will substantially strengthen the Indian Navy’s combat readiness, ensuring a secure maritime environment for India. The project’s success holds immense strategic importance for India’s growing blue water ambitions.
