High Court Slams Chandigarh’s Rotten Sector 26 Market
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 31, 2025, pulled up the Chandigarh UT Administration over deplorable conditions at Sector 26’s fruit and vegetable market. The court’s action followed a Chandigarh Tribune report highlighting rampant encroachments, poor sanitation, and muddy roads.
The judges expressed serious concern over the Administration’s apparent lack of management. They have demanded a detailed affidavit explaining the situation and the steps taken, or lack thereof, to rectify the issues.
A planned relocation of the market to Sector 39 is currently stalled. The Supreme Court’s stay on the e-auction process for the new site is delaying the much-needed improvement.
This case underscores the urgent need for effective urban planning and efficient municipal services in Chandigarh. The prolonged neglect of basic infrastructure not only affects the vendors and consumers but also reflects poorly on the city’s overall image and governance. The High Court’s intervention highlights the growing public dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of crucial civic issues.
