Govt tightens e-waste disposal rules

Delhi Cracks Down on E-Waste Chaos: Strict New Rules for Public Contracts

The Delhi government has issued a stern warning to all departments: strict adherence to responsible e-waste disposal is now mandatory in all public tenders. This follows a recent National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) meeting that highlighted the urgent need for better e-waste management.

The new directive mandates the use of only authorized e-waste recyclers for all government contracts. This move aims to curb the rampant unsafe practices prevalent in many informal recycling hubs across the city.

To further bolster this initiative, the Delhi government is also installing 65 new e-waste collection bins across the city. These bins will provide designated drop-off points for electronic waste, making responsible disposal more convenient for citizens.

This decisive action by the Delhi government is a significant step towards mitigating the environmental and health hazards associated with improper e-waste handling. The success of this initiative will not only improve Delhi’s air quality but also serve as a model for other states grappling with the growing e-waste challenge. The impact on informal sector workers needs careful monitoring and support to ensure a just transition.
