Taliban’s Grip: Afghanistan a Breeding Ground for Terror, Warns US Report
The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has issued a stark warning, highlighting Afghanistan’s continued role as a haven for terrorist groups. Despite the 2020 Doha Agreement, ISIS-K, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and Al-Qaeda remain active within the country.
The report points a finger at the Taliban’s ambivalent stance towards these militant groups. Their support, either tacit or overt, has fuelled insecurity and undermined regional stability.
This situation has severely hampered diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis. The Taliban’s harsh governance has further exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation, leaving millions vulnerable.
The deteriorating security landscape and humanitarian catastrophe pose a significant threat not only to Afghanistan but also to neighbouring countries and the wider region. This necessitates a concerted international effort to address the root causes of instability and prevent further escalation. The implications for India’s security interests, particularly concerning cross-border terrorism, are profound and demand careful consideration.
