Beas Fury: Kapurthala Farmlands Submerged, Farmers Cry Foul

Flash floods originating from the Chakki Mirthal area triggered a sudden surge in the Beas River on August 3, 2025, inundating vast swathes of agricultural land in Kapurthala district. The worst affected areas were Dhilwan and Sultanpur Lodhi tehsils.

Temporary embankments, erected to protect the fields, proved inadequate against the force of the water. These gave way, leading to widespread submergence of standing crops.

Farmers are now facing substantial losses, with their livelihoods hanging in the balance. They are demanding immediate government assistance and the construction of more robust, long-term flood prevention infrastructure.

District officials have assured that the water levels are expected to recede swiftly. However, the scale of damage necessitates a comprehensive assessment and a swift response to alleviate the distress of affected farmers. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved flood management strategies in the region to safeguard agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of farming communities.
