Delhi Govt Scraps GST on Fortified Rice, Boosting Nutrition Schemes
Delhi’s government has provided a significant boost to its crucial nutrition programmes by amending its Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework. The amendment, effective immediately, exempts food inputs used in the production of fortified rice kernels.
This crucial tax relief, sanctioned by the Lieutenant Governor on August 3, 2025, directly addresses production costs. Lowering these costs will make fortified rice more accessible and affordable.
The move primarily benefits welfare schemes like the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). These schemes target vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and young children.
This exemption is expected to significantly improve the nutritional value of meals provided under these programs. The long-term impact on public health, particularly among the most vulnerable sections of Delhi’s population, is anticipated to be substantial.
