SC to Hear Plea Against CBI Transfer in Colonel Assault Case
The Supreme Court will soon hear a petition challenging the transfer of an assault case involving a Colonel to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Colonel alleges he was assaulted by Punjab Police personnel following a parking dispute in Chandigarh.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier criticised the Chandigarh Police investigation, citing perceived lapses and lack of progress. This led to the High Court ordering the case’s transfer to the CBI.
The petitioner argues the High Court’s decision was erroneous and seeks the Supreme Court’s intervention to restore the case to the original investigating agency. The hearing date is yet to be announced.
This case highlights concerns about the effectiveness of investigations into alleged assaults against military personnel and underscores the need for transparent and impartial probes. The Supreme Court’s decision will have significant implications for inter-state jurisdiction and the handling of such sensitive cases involving the armed forces.
