Monsoon Mayhem: Rs 580 Crore Blow to Jal Shakti; Thousands Left High and Dry
Torrential rains and subsequent floods across the state have wreaked havoc on the Jal Shakti Department’s infrastructure, causing widespread disruption to water supply and sanitation. Preliminary assessments reveal damage to 7,543 schemes, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs 580.30 crore.
The department has been working tirelessly to restore normalcy. As of August 4, 2025, 5,440 out of 5,805 affected water supply schemes have been temporarily repaired. However, the estimated damage to these schemes alone stands at Rs 434.47 crore.
The devastation extends beyond water supply. Irrigation systems, flood protection measures, sewerage networks, and even hand pumps have suffered significant damage, impacting numerous communities.
The scale of the destruction highlights the urgent need for robust infrastructure upgrades to withstand increasingly erratic weather patterns. The long-term implications for rural water security and public health are deeply concerning, demanding immediate and substantial government intervention.
