Chandigarh Police: From Challans to Citizen Safety
The Chandigarh Traffic Police is set to overhaul its approach to traffic management, shifting its focus from revenue generation through challans to improving road safety and public awareness. This follows a directive from the Director General of Police (DGP) addressing concerns about excessive fines and unprofessional behaviour.
The new strategy will see a greater reliance on automated systems for detecting and processing routine traffic violations. Manual challans will be reserved for serious offences endangering public safety.
The DGP has strongly warned officers against any misconduct, emphasizing strict accountability and adherence to professional standards. This move comes in the wake of numerous complaints against traffic personnel and after MP Manish Tewari voiced concerns about the high number of challans issued.
This reform is crucial not only for improving the image of the Chandigarh Traffic Police, but also for fostering a more responsible and safer road environment for all citizens. The success of this initiative will depend on effective implementation and consistent monitoring of officer conduct.
