Banke Bihari Temple Row: SC Questions UP Govt’s Hasty Takeover
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday defended its controversial ordinance concerning the management of the revered Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan before the Supreme Court. The court, however, expressed reservations about the state government’s swift action.
The Supreme Court suggested the formation of an interim committee, to be headed by retired High Court judges, to oversee the temple’s affairs until the matter is fully resolved. This proposal aims to ensure smooth functioning and prevent further disputes.
The apex court questioned the rationale behind the government’s haste in assuming control, highlighting concerns about transparency and due process. The hearing has been adjourned to August 8, 2025, for further arguments and deliberations.
This case underscores the ongoing tension between religious administration and government intervention in managing significant religious sites across India. The Supreme Court’s intervention is crucial to ensure a fair and transparent resolution, safeguarding the interests of devotees and the temple’s sanctity.
