Sector 26 Crackdown: Chandigarh Market Committee Gets Tough on Illegal Vendors
Chandigarh’s Market Committee has been granted sweeping new powers to tackle the burgeoning problem of illegal vendors in Sector 26. New bylaws, approved on August 8, 2025, allow the committee to impose hefty fines and seize goods from those operating without licenses.
The move comes in response to persistent complaints regarding sanitation and encroachment issues in the area. The bylaws aim to restore order and improve the overall environment for both vendors and consumers.
Under the new regulations, unlicensed vendors now face fines of up to ₹10,000. Furthermore, the committee is empowered to confiscate goods from those operating illegally.
Unlicensed events are also strictly prohibited under the new bylaws. Registered vendors, meanwhile, are required to operate only within designated zones.
This decisive action by the Market Committee is expected to significantly impact the business landscape of Sector 26. The success of these new bylaws will be crucial in setting a precedent for similar initiatives across the city, addressing a long-standing challenge impacting public spaces and urban planning.
