Tewari Pushes for Separate PGIMER in Chandigarh: Mayor, Rajya Sabha Seat Also Demanded
Congress leader Manish Tewari has urged the establishment of a new, independent Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. His proposal, made on August 8, 2025, highlights the current institute’s limitations.
Tewari cited burgeoning patient numbers and inadequate infrastructure as key reasons for the need for a separate PGIMER. He stressed the urgent need for enhanced healthcare facilities in the region.
Beyond healthcare, Tewari also advocated for significant changes to Chandigarh’s governance structure. He reiterated his long-standing demand for an elected Mayor for the Union Territory.
Furthermore, he pushed for Chandigarh to be granted a Rajya Sabha seat, arguing it would strengthen the city’s political voice at the national level.
These proposals, if implemented, would significantly impact Chandigarh’s healthcare landscape and its political representation, potentially addressing long-standing concerns about governance and access to quality medical care. The demands are likely to spark a fresh debate on the future of Chandigarh’s administration and healthcare infrastructure.
